January 10, 2018Replacement for Std Norm lookup table
January 10, 2018Andriejus Putiatinas posted a great entry and his implementation in Oracle pl/sql code for the normal cumulative distribution function (CDF) and the inverse function.
The post is right here.
ODA patch problem
December 20, 2017Prologue: Working on several OAK patches for the Oracle Database Appliance, I’ve run into an error with starting the database. Typical alert.log messages look like this …
ORA-15025: could not open disk "/dev/mapper/HDD_E0_S17_575004840p1" ORA-27041: unable to open file Linux-x86_64 Error: 13: Permission denied Additional information: 9 ORA-15025: could not open disk "/dev/mapper/HDD_E0_S18_574779608p1" ORA-27041: unable to open file Linux-x86_64 Error: 13: Permission denied
Act I: The problem seems to be a permissions change with an ORACLE_HOME file:
grid@db12$ ls -l /u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0.4/dbhome_1/bin/oracle -rwsr-s--x 1 oracle oinstall 239874769 Jan 21 14:43 /u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0.4/dbhome_1/bin/oracle
… group membership of oinstall is wrong. It needs to be asmadmin.
Act II: The solution
grid@db12$ setasmgidwrap o=/u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0.4/dbhome_1/bin/oracle
… check the group membership and it is now correct.
Epilogue: I don’t know why this happens, but I’ve seen this error following several of the 12.1 and up OAK patches. Hope this helps someone else.
Bad behavior by any other name
August 31, 2017What is sin?
“Whatever weakens your reason, impairs the tenderness of your conscience, obscures your sense of God, takes off your relish for spiritual things, whatever increases the authority of the body over the mind, that thing is sin to you, however innocent it may seem in itself.”

What is worship?
September 9, 2012I happened across this today. It’s taken from William Temple’s (1881-1944) Readings in St. John’s Gospel.
“Worship is the submission of all our nature to God. It is the quickening of conscience by His holiness; the nourishment of mind with His truth; the purifying of imagination by His Beauty; the opening of the heart to His love; the surrender of will to His purpose – and all of this gathered up in adoration, the most selfless emotion of which our nature is capable and therefore the chief remedy for that self-centeredness which is our original sin and the source of all actual sin”.
